China records more than 1,600 coronavirus deaths, France confirms Europe's first death

Kathmandu, February 16

China's National Health Commission announced Sunday that the death toll from the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in mainland China reached 1,665.

Similarly, there were 2,009 new confirmed cases on Saturday and the total accumulated number so far reached 68,500.

Meanwhile, France reported Europe's first death from the COVID-19. A Chinese tourist from Hubei, where the disease emerges, died in France.

As per the Aljazeera, Katsunobu Kato, Japan's health minister, said 70 more people on board the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total to 355 cases. 

Some 3,700 passengers and crew were aboard the ship, where the most coronavirus infections outside China have occurred. Those testing positive are transferred to Japanese hospitals.
